Cumin is a herb, which is mostly associated with Mexican and Spanish foods, though it is also widely used in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking.

What is cumin?

Cumin The seed and herb have a distinct flavour and is considered as a favourite and its supporting properties are quite impressive too! Going by the scientific name Cuminum Cyminum, it belongs to the Apiaceae family and flourishes in hot summer weather conditions and in sandy and fertile soils. The seeds are greyish-yellow, oblong and have vertical ridges on its outer surface.

Brief history

The small seed is known to have originated in Egypt around 5000 years back where it used as a spice and also in mummification processes. The powder of the herb is greenish brown in colour, is pungent and also slightly sweet. It is also traditionally used in medicine as a diuretic and is used as a natural remedy to several gastric discomforts such as flatulence.
