An evergreen shrub (or sometimes a small tree), the psidium guajava is predominantly found in Mexico and can be successfully grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Its branches are widely spread and the tree is easy to recognize. The bark is copper-coloured, smooth and thin and flakes off. The fruit has a strong and musky odour. It is round or ovoid when ripe and sometimes appears pear-shaped. Cultivated from the seed, it has an extremely slow rate of growth that can take up to several months and then rapid growth takes over. In regions that have a distinct winter season, the psidium guajava produces more fruits when compared to tropical areas. The guava fruit is said to be the best known among the Myrtaceae fruits. The tree can live anywhere from 30 to 50 years.
